The simplest and the best way to complete your thesis or dissertation successfully is you must follow the advice given by your adviser. The following are the few things that you cannot expect from your adviser.
1. Your adviser may not be your mentor:
The person who guides you for your personal as well as professional development is called as the Mentor. The mentor will have enormous interest for success in your life. The mentor will also make you academically socialize to the great personalities in your field of interest. But, the adviser is the one who will guide you in your thesis or dissertation or some course related works and they don’t have any relationship with your personal life.
2. You must not anticipate your adviser to be your counselor or mentor.
3. Do not expect your adviser to be your friend:
They may become a friend to you, but you don’t expect them to be your friend. In general, students won’t develop friendship with their advisers.
4. You must not expect your adviser to spend lots of time with you.
5. Don’t expect that your adviser will provide you all the answers:
Your ad visor may not solve all your research problems, so don’t expect them to do so. They won’t be completing your thesis or dissertation, unless you show your interest in completing your work.
6. You must not expect that your adviser must read all draft work that you are preparing.
7. Your adviser will not holding your hands till you complete your thesis or dissertation:
Do not expect your adviser to hold your hand.
Since, a thesis or dissertation is an unaccompanied endeavor; you must be more initiative in completing your project.
8. Your adviser will not help you to overcome the thesis or dissertation stress:
Completing a thesis or dissertation is the most stressful for graduates. So it is better you don’t expect that your adviser will hear all your problems because you are not the only student for the adviser.
9. The adviser will not be fighting for your problems.
10. You should not expect to stay with your adviser even after completing your thesis or dissertation:
In general, students will go away, as soon as they complete their work. But there are few students, who will wish to stay with the adviser, so it is not fair to do. The completion of your project work is based on the deadline given to by your college or university.
If you want your advisers to do the above mentioned things, then only the best mentor can do it. So you must understand the real situation and maintain the good student – adviser relationship till your work completion.
